Cognitive Behavioural Coaching

In this session, Jonathan will explore the development of cognitive behavioural coaching over the past three decades, from its origins in behavioural and cognitive behavioural therapy, and the development of new therapeutic approaches. He will draw on his work over the past fifteen years of to translate these concepts to coaching. During this short introductory session he will focus on three approaches; Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing and Dialectical Behavioural Coaching as examples of approaches which can be adapted for use in coaching. He will specifically focus on the core elements of these approaches, and highlight lookout factors which require adaption for the coaching arena, linking these aspects to the ICF competency framework.

 

Speaker: Prof. Jonathan Passmore

Jonathan Passmore is professor of coaching at Henley Business School, SVP at a digital coaching provider and Chair of the British Psychological Society Division of Coaching Psychology. He holds five degrees, is a chartered psychologist and is an a credentialed coach and is a trained supervisor. He has published widely, his most recent books include Becoming a Coach: The Essential ICF Guide (Springer) and Third Wave Cognitive Behavioural Approaches (Pavilion), and has published over 200 scientific papers and book chapters, making him one of the most widely published coaching researchers. Jonathan is listed in the coaches Thinkers 50 and the Global Gurus list.

 

By the end of the session, individuals will

  1. Understand the development of three waves of cognitive -behavioural coaching
  2. Understand the research evidence underpinning examples of these approaches
  3. Understand the essential ingredients of three cognitive third wave approaches
  4. Understand key watch-outs when applying these concepts in coaching
